ଯେଉଁ ଭିକ୍ଷୁ ଅପ୍ରମାଦେ ହୋଇଛନ୍ତି ବ୍ରତୀ ।

ପରମାଦରେ ଅଟନ୍ତି ଯିଏ ଭୟଦର୍ଶୀ ।। 

ଛୋଟ ବଡ଼ ବନ୍ଧନଙ୍କୁ ଛିନ୍ନ ସିଏ କରି

ଆଗକୁ ଆଗ ନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଗତି ଯେ ତାଙ୍କରି ।୧୧।

ଯେଉଁ ଭିକ୍ଷୁ ଅପ୍ରମାଦେ ହୋଇଛନ୍ତି ବ୍ରତୀ ।

ପରମାଦରେ ଅଟନ୍ତି ଯିଏ ଭୟଦର୍ଶୀ ।। 

ଘଟିବାର କେବେନାହିଁ ତାଙ୍କର ବିଚ୍ୟୁତି 

ନିର୍ବାଣର ଅନ୍ତିକରେ ନିଶ୍ଚେ ତାଙ୍କ ସ୍ଥିତି ।୧୨।

ଅପ୍ପମାଦରତୋ ଭିକ୍ଖୁ ପମାଦେ ଭୟଦସ୍ୱିବା ।

ସଞ୍ଯୋଜନଂ ଅଣୁଂ ଥୂଳଂ ଦହଂ ଅଗ୍ଗୀ ବ ଗଚ୍ଛତି ।୧୧।

ଅପ୍ପମାଦରତୋ ଭିକ୍ଖୁୁ ପମାଦେ ଭୟଦସ୍ସିବା ।

ଅଭବ୍ବୋ ପରିହାନାୟ ନିବ୍ବାନସ୍ସେ'ବ ସନ୍ତିକେ ।୧୨।

ଅନୁବାଦକୀୟ ଟୀକା: ଏହି ଅଧମ ଅନୁବାଦକକୁ ପାଲି ଜଣା ନାହିଁ । ଏଣୁ ଏହି ପଦ୍ୟାନୁବାଦଟି ପାଇଁ ତାହାର ମୂଳ ସହାୟ ହେଲା  ପ୍ରଫେସର ପ୍ରହ୍ଲାଦ ପ୍ରଧାନଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ସମ୍ପାଦିତ 'ପାଲି ଧର୍ମପଦ' ଗ୍ରନ୍ଥଟି, ଯେଉଁଥିରେ ସେ ସଂସ୍କୃତ ରୂପାନ୍ତର ସହ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଗଦ୍ୟାନୁବାଦ କରିଯାଇଛନ୍ତି । ଗ୍ରନ୍ଥଟିର ପ୍ରଥମ ସଂସ୍କରଣ ୧୯୭୮ ମସିହାରେ ପ୍ରକାଶିତ । କିନ୍ତୁ ଏହି ଅନୁବାଦକ ୧୯୯୪ ମସିହାରେ କଟକସ୍ଥ ପ୍ରକାଶନ ସଂସ୍ଥା ଫ୍ରେଣ୍ଡ୍‌ସ୍‌ ପବ୍ଲିଶର୍ସ ଛାପିଥିବା ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟ ସଂସ୍କରଣଟି ବ୍ୟବହାର କରିଛି । ଏହା ଛଡ଼ା ଏହି ପଦ୍ୟାନୁବାଦ କରିବା ପାଇଁ 'ଦି ସେକ୍ରେଡ଼୍ ବୁକ୍ସ୍ ଅଫ୍ ଦି ଇଷ୍ଟ୍' ସିରିଜ୍‌ରେ ମାକ୍ସ୍ ମ୍ୟୁଲର୍‌ଙ୍କ ଦ୍ୱାରା ସମ୍ପାଦିତ 'ଦି ଧମ୍ମପଦ' ଇଂରାଜି ଗ୍ରନ୍ଥଟିର ୨୦୧୩ ମସିହାରେ ରୁଟ୍‌ଲେଜ୍ ଛାପିଥିବା ସଂସ୍କରଣଟିର ମଧ୍ୟ ବ୍ୟବହାର କରାଯାଇଛି ।

Wash your face off the mirror.
The scene on the other side will change.
 
On this side, are hills of sand.
On the other side, are fields of paddy,
and a blue river.
 
You wanted to hear a song?
Come, I’ll take you to a country without mirrors.
Then, every scene will sing a song.
And
you yourself will turn
into a scene singing a song.

Note: This poem is from the volume ‘Kebe kebe janha ratire’ published by Kitab Bhavan, Bhubaneswar in the year 2012. Chirashree Indrasingh (1966-present) is one of the foremost contemporary writers of fiction in Odia, as well as a formidable poet in her own right. She published her first book of Odia short stories, titled 'Bengabati katha' (Frog Woman’s Tale) in 1997. Since then she has published seven short story collections, two anthologies of poems, and a couple of novellas. 'Utiani Sanja,' 'Aanka Banka Naee,' 'Bidambana,' and 'Sua' are some of her notable works. She is the recipient of Bhubaneswar Book Fair Award, Kanheilal Award, Subrata Rath Memorial Award, and a Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India, amongst others. She teaches Political science at U.N. (Autonomous) College, Adashpur, Odisha.

କଲେଜରୁ ଫେରିଲା ବେଳକୁ ଆମ ଗାଡ଼ି – ମୋ ସ୍ପେକ୍ଟ୍ରା ଆଉ ତା’ ସ୍କୁଟି – ମନକୁମନ ମୋଡ଼ି ହେଇଗଲା ଭିନସ୍ ଇନ୍ ଗଳିକୁ । ଆମର ଯିବାର ଥିଲା ପୁରୁଣା ବସ ଷ୍ଟାଣ୍ଡ ପତ୍ରିକା ପାଇଁ । ଗାଡ଼ି ବାପୁଜି ନଗରରେ କେମିତି ପହଞ୍ଚିଲା କେଜାଣି !

ଦୁଇଜଣଯାକ ଏ. କେ. ମିଶ୍ର ଆଗରେ ଗାଡ଼ି ରଖିଲୁ । ଉପସ୍ଥାନ ପକାଇବା ପାଇଁ ପାଞ୍ଚ ମିନିଟ ବହି ଦୋକାନରେ ମୁହଁ ମାରିଲୁ । ସେ ଅର୍ଡ଼ର ଦେଇଥିବା ଲେଗୁଇ କାଜାମିଆ ଆସି ନଥିଲା, ଆସି ବି ନଥିଲା ମୁଁ ମଗେଇଥିବା ‘ରେଜ୍ ହାଏ ଦି ରୁଫ୍‌ବିମ୍ସ୍ କାର୍ପେଣ୍ଟର୍ସ୍’ ।

ମୁଁ ଭିନସ୍ ଇନ୍ ଆଡ଼କୁ ମୁହେଇଁବାରୁ ସେ କହିଲା ଯେ, “ମୁଁ ପନିର ଦୋସା ଖାଇପାରିବିନି ଆଉ” । ତହିଁକି ମୋର ଉତ୍ତର ହେଲା, “ମୋର ଖଟ୍ଟାମିଠାର ଛୋଲେ ଭଟୁରେ ପାଇଁ ମୁଡ଼ ନାହିଁ” ।

ଡିସେମ୍ବର ସନ୍ଧ୍ୟା । ସୂର୍ଯ୍ୟ ଦିଗ୍‌ବଳୟ ଉପରେ । ସେ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ଜଗନ୍ନାଥର ବିନା ପିଆଜ ରସୁଣ ଅବତାର ଆରମ୍ଭ ହୋଇନଥାଏ । ଠିକ୍ ସେଇ ସମୟରେ ରଞ୍ଜନ ବୋଧହୁଏ ସିଙ୍ଗଡ଼ା କାଢ଼ି ପ୍ରଥମ ଭାରି ବରା ତେଲରେ ପକାଇଲା ।

ଯେମିତି ଆମ ଗାଡ଼ି ମନକୁ ମନ ମୋଡ଼ି ହେଇଯାଇଥିଲା ବାପୁଜି ନଗରକୁ, ସେମିତି ଆମ ପାଦ ଆପେ ଆପେ ଚାଲିଲା ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ଆଡ଼କୁ । ଆମକୁ ଦେଖି ରଞ୍ଜନ କିଛି ନ ପଚାରି ଗୋଟିଏ ଦନାରେ ଚାରୋଟି ଟଙ୍କିକିଆ ସିଙ୍ଗଡ଼ା ଦେଇଦେଲା । ଆମେ ସୁସା ହୋଇ ଡହଡହ ତତଲା ସିଙ୍ଗଡ଼ା ଖାଇ ସାରୁସାରୁ ଦୁଇ ଦୁଇଟା ଟଙ୍କିକିଆ ବରା ମୋ’ ପାଇଁ ସିଙ୍ଗଡ଼ା ଦନାରେ ଦେଲା, ଆଉ ତା’ ପାଇଁ ନୂଆଟାଏରେ ।

ଖାଇ ସାରି, ଟଙ୍କା ଦେଇ ଫେରି ଗାଡ଼ି ଷ୍ଟାର୍ଟ କଲାବେଳକୁ ସେ ମୋତେ ଆମର ଚିରାଚରିତ ପ୍ରଶ୍ନ ପଚାରିଲା, “ଆଜି ବରା ଭଲ ଲାଗିଲା ନା ସିଙ୍ଗଡ଼ା” । ମୁଁ ମୋ’ ସାର୍ଟ୍‌ର ହାତର ଫୋଲ୍ଡ଼କୁ ଆଉ ଥରେ ଭଲକରି ମୋଡ଼ି ଦେଇ କହିଲି, “ତୁ” । 

ସେ, “ତୋ’ ଭଳିଆ ଛତରା ଆଉ କେହି ନାହିଁ” ବୋଲି କହି ଗାଡ଼ି ଷ୍ଟାର୍ଟ କଲା ଆଉ ଉଡ଼ିଗଲା ଭୁବନେଶ୍ୱରର ଅଦିନିଆ ଝଡ଼ର କଙ୍କି ଭଳି । ପଛରେ ଓନିର ଦୁଇ କାନି ଥିଲା ସେଇ କଙ୍କିର ଡେଣା ।

The Lions' Gate of Lingaraj Temple (1868-69)

The image provided above has been taken from Volume I of 'Antiquities of Orissa' by Rajendra Lal Mitra (15 February 1822 – 26 July 1891), first published in 1875. But it is highly likely that it was created in the winter of 1868-69 when the fieldwork for the book was undertaken by Mitra in the then Orissa division of Bengal Presidency. The second volume of the book was published in 1880. This was the first exhaustive documentation of the architectural heritage of coastal Orissa. Rajendra Lal was the first Indologist of Indian origins, one of the first Indian masters of the modern discipline of history and a very competent amateur photographer.

This second image (a photograph) captures the same space 150 years later, in November 2018. It was taken as part of a mixed media installation titled 'Outsiders' created in a first floor hall of 'Tarang Club' located on the Eastern bank of Bindusagar, a tank near Lingaraj Temple considered as holy by many Hindus. This installation was constructed by Ramahari Jena, Ramakanta Samantaray and Sailen Routray. 

Much had changed; much had remained the same.
