Those who stayed back on the road,
after having found patches of shade,
I have sent them news,
that I am still on the road,
walking.

For this whole stretch,
I have not extended my hand for anyone;
when I have met people,
I have never asked them about the path.

Our horoscopes stretch
on the bloody palm of the hunter.
I have forgotten the faces
of those who used to say,
that our true skeletons
lie in the dark caves of dejection's mountains.

My feet walk towards my heart:
it has birds
whose wings have caught fire;
it has boats
whose sails have caught the storm.

Can one climb the hills
without having stored
the roar of the tiger in one’s heart?
can one dive into the river
without roasting one’s body
in the green fire of the leaves?

I meet only myself;
in every lane,
in every turn,
with new faces.

It is now that I know:
if one keeps on walking
then roads never end;
even if one kills the wasp in the galipot,
the demon does not die.

It is now that I know,
that darkness never ends.
But, no matter where one goes
there is a crowd of stars;
where the forests end there are rivers;
and where the rivers empty,
there is the sea.

Gained in Translation

From the time I started teaching myself English in fifth standard by using the brilliant three-part translation manual by Odia educator Bainkunthanath Acharya - called ‘Structural Approach to Translation’ - I realized that ‘I’ exists only in translation – across languages, geographies and time-scapes. After learning the basics of the new language, I soon started translating bits and pieces of texts between Odia and English for fun. What started as play in childhood has continued with me till now as a source of joy and solace.

Over the last three decades, amongst other stuff, I have translated eighteenth century fiction and twentieth century poetry, from Odia into English. I have also translated essays by Arundhati Roy, the educational classic ‘Deschooling Society’ by Ivan Illich, stray academic essays that have been important landmarks in my journey as a thinking and writing being, and quite a bit of poetry from across the world into Odia.

Recently, in an act of, what seems as hubris, I translated sixty story cards for children produced by a nonprofit Foundation, from Hindi to Odia. This was my first translation ‘assignment’. Just before I started work on these story cards, I had begun translating Hindi poems into Odia. Most of my translation practice has never resulted in publications; it has not given me any monetary compensation either. So, why do I do it?

First, it is a very effective way of learning languages by increasing intimacy with them. It is only by translating that one really understands languages, by occupying the tiny crevices and toeholds that ultimately prop up the soaring structures of their vast architectures. Just one example here will suffice. Say, you are translating a word as simple as ‘free’ into Hindi. It’s simple. Isn’t it?

No; it is not. The word ‘free’ in English collapses two meanings into one utterance, that need two very different Hindi words to be captured with accuracy. One meaning of ‘free’ is getting something without giving anything in exchange, as exemplified by the cliché ‘There aint no free lunch.’ This meaning of the word ‘free’ has to be rendered in Hindi as ‘muft’. The other meaning of ‘free’ refers to the idea of being without restraints and constraints – ‘azad’ in Hindi.

I don’t know about you, but unless I am translating, I tend to gloss over such nuances while reading and speaking. And as a result, the intimacy borne through translation alerts you to the ideological framework embodied in languages as well. Why on earth, for example, would English conflate ‘muft’ and ‘azad’ in one word? What does it tell us about the world as ‘English’ sees it?

Apart from learning a language, there are often many ‘gains’ through translation. I read ‘Nirbasita ra Bilapa’ by poet Madhusudan Rao (1853-1912), an Odia rendering of William Cowper’s ‘The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk’, much before I read the original in English. To my mind, and I might be wrong here, the Odia version is an improvement over Cowper’s poem. One can give many more examples. But hopefully this single one will suffice for the time being to illustrate that much is often ‘gained in translation’ as is indeed lost.

A third reason, why I translate, without any apparent material rewards, is to spend quality time with minds often dead and long buried/burnt, that are immensely and immeasurably superior to mine. I feel humbled when I translate their works. But at the same time, I also feel deeply ennobled. This process is, what in many Indian traditions, called satsang. Satsang originally means association with the ‘true’/’truth’, and by extension with the beneficial/Shiva and beautiful/Sundara. It is not the noisy mockery that has come to be called by this name in this cacophonous century.

Thus, every act of translation is a process of strange alchemy, that transmutes not only the two languages that are now joined by a bridge, or for that matter the text that stands renewed with new flesh, bones and blood, but the very being of the translator himself. I am a mean, conceited and trivial individual; but I know I'd have been far more insufferable if translation had not shaped me.

What We Carried Back

Sailen Routray

Market in Djerba in the early 1900s (Wikimedia Commons)

What you’ll see when you step into this space, is what we have carried back, from a few villages in Ganjam.

And, pray, what is it that have we carried back?

That is a complicated question to answer; but let us at least attempt.

We have carried objects: we have carried pots that carry the ākāsa and the māti of the villages; chairs that sit egos; mirrors that shatter reflections; ornaments that knot desires; seeds that create hungers; sarees that drape our paintings; and slippers that stamp our imagination;

We have carried images: of the goddess that suddenly possessed a friend; of bamboo partitions that draped modesty; of day-long fertility rituals that promised doubt; of tigers that danced; and of girls who could not go to school and still smiled;

We have carried memories: of generous gifts of onions and brinjals; of rangolis in the off-white colour of rice garlanding our dreams; of fecund fields of blood-red tomatoes with no one to harvest them; of unknown brands of cosmetics that promised us narratives of transformation;

We have carried insights:  about a beast called bikasa; about why it might be better to let the fruit of ones labour rot in the fields than hold it in the cramped belly of the home; of the meanings of the conversations when one can barely make out the other’s face in the twinkling darkness;

We have carried objects that have birthed images, images that have congealed into memories; memories that have frames insights, and insights that have germinated again into objects.

We have carried all this;

we left bits of ourselves behind;

was it a fair exchange?

Find out.

Note: Here on this blog I envisage this piece as a prose poem. It is an 'Invitation Note' that I originally wrote for a collaborative public art show titled 'What We Carried Back' by Nilansubala Sasamal and Veejayant Dash. This show was inaugurated on 27th of March, 2015 and stayed open till the 31st of the same month at Lalit Kala Akademi, Kharavela Nagar, Bhubaneswar. The text presented here is an unedited version of this note.

‘Heartless’ by Akhila Nayak

Translated by Sailen Routray

A Windmill in the Netherlands (2020)

No tears get shed. The last drop gets sucked after squeezing the mud dry. The pot bites the earth and rolls on the bank as if it is angry at someone. Over it hovers a thirst; it does not know what the pot contains. While flying, the tortoise falls down; its sighs hammering to the same beats as the cowherds’ excitements. The nets in the fisherfolks’ hamlet get torn not long after being sewn. The stone weighed down by the fish-bones mumbles its displeasures. That stone, that stone is the eye; no tears get shed.

NoteAkhila Naik works as faculty in Odia in Kalahandi University in Bhawanipatna, Orissa. This poem was originally published in his collection titled 'Gadhua Bela' - 'Time for a Bath'. The original poem is in free verse, although here I have attempted the translation as a prose poem.

Akhila Naik's work has been at the forefront of a process of transformation of Odia poetry over the last three decades where the language and concerns of the common people have come to the fore. Although he is primarily known as a poet in his home state, with multiple collections published to wide acclaim, to the wider literary field in India he is known as the writer of the the first Odia Dalit novel 'Bheda' (originally published in 2010) that was translated by the Delhi based academic Raj Kumar and published by OUP in 2017.
